Patchwork
for tenor saxophone and string quartet
This piece is inspired by the way our brain functions and structures information. Just as our brain consists of various neurological areas which are interconnected, Patchwork is made of different musical islands which each explore a different logic, relationship of instruments and method of notation.

This piece was commissioned by Ileana Termini and written for her and the Otilka Quartet.

Patchwork was premiered on December 2 at Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar.
Summon
for reed quintet
Inspired by the sky with all of its ever-changing details such as cloud formations and color shades, this piece aims to create a peaceful atmosphere. As the score leaves some freedom to the musicians, the five performers explore organic musical textures together in which their roles are equal.

This piece was commissioned by the Wonderfeel Festival 2024 and written for the Dianto Reed Quintet.

Summon was premiered on July 21 at Wonderfeel Festival.
Sheltered
for ensemble
This piece explores the feeling of Geborgenheit (the German word for being sheltered and secure). Its musical material consists of a both melodic and textural world that is inspired by sounds from my own past.

The piece was written for Score Collective Ensemble. It was premiered on the 19th of January, 2024.
2023
Nocturnal
for prepared piano

Nocturnal explores the emotional journey of an insomniac person during a sleepless night. The music mirrors how everything the person feels is intensified by the experience of insomnia. The piece covers a variety of moods throughout the night, with a continous pressing tension looming in the background. Only when the first rays of sunlight enter the room, the person can finally fall asleep. In order to highlight emotional changes, I used different techniques to expand the sound of the piano.

This piece was commissioned by pianist Mattias Spee and will be performed during his tour for the Dutch Classical Talent Award 2023. To find out more, go to events.

Lower Grounds
for clarinet, double bass, piano and electronics
Lower Grounds revolves around the phenomenon of dreaming. It is inspired by my own dreams, in which continuous, detailed storylines occur right next to fragmented, blurry scenes. The piece expresses this dichotomy musically and creates an auditory dream space for the listener to explore. The piece was commissioned by clarinet player Samuel Freitas and has been premiered in June 2023, at the Amstelkerk, Amsterdam.

Anger/Orange
for marimba

This piece is a new version of the piano piece of the same name (see here). I arranged it for percussionist Gerben Jongsma for his participation at the TROMP International Percussion Competition 2022.

Strutbird
for string quartet

Strutbird is a made-up word describing the proud, yet funny energy of this miniature piece. Written for a workshop that was part of Kronos’ Fifty for the Future project.

2022
Stressed City Bird
for piano

This piece is an homage to the pigeons of Amsterdam. Being hardly respected in big cities, the little creatures have always had my sympathy, and so I decided to give them a musical platform. This led to Stressed City Bird, a piece inspired by their groove and their daily struggles. The piece was first performed by pianist Mengjie Han during the SNAAR Festival 2022.

Dark Matter
for 2 cellos

Dark Matter is a meditative, intimate piece in which I explore the effect of silence and space. Like a thick, dark forest, it creates a space with both sheltering and unsettling qualities. The title is inspired by the book by Michelle Paver.

Anger/Orange
for piano

Anger/Orange explores the different emotional stages of an angry person.

Little moody creature
for cello

A miniature piece for solo cello. Presented at the New Music Arena in 2021.

Im Schwarm
for piano

For Im Schwarm (Engl.: In the Swarm) I had a cinematic shot in mind, which shows a crowd of people from above. Everyone walks in a hectic manner and the individuals can’t be distinguished from the crowd. Driven by competition and greed, the swarm effortlessly moves forward, but as we zoom in on an individual, we see the stress and loneliness that’s caused by the system.
